(Mastering Garment Techniques for Fashion Design)

Objective: This two-day intensive workshop will elevate student’s garment construction skills to a professional level. Participants will engage in focused training on technical sewing, fabric manipulation, and finishing techniques. By the end of the workshop, they will possess a comprehensive understanding of advanced garment-making methods and the expertise to enhance their fashion pieces significantly.

    • Session 1:
      10:00 AM - 11:00 AM (1hr)

    • Session 2:
      11:00 AM - 12:30 PM (1.5 hrs)

    • Lunch Break:
      12:30 PM - 1:00 PM (30 min)

    • Session 3:
      1:00 PM - 3:00 PM (2 hrs)

  • Session 1: Understanding Materials & Tools (1 hour)

    • Overview of essential sewing tools & machinery

    • Fabric characteristics & behaviour (woven vs. knit, grainline importance)

    • Choosing the right interfacing, thread, and needles for different fabrics

    Session 2: Mastering Precision Stitching (1.5 hours)

    • Practicing seam accuracy (straight stitch, curved lines, pivoting)

    • Seam finishes: French seams, overlocking, binding

    • Exploring decorative topstitching techniques

    Break (30 minutes)

    Session 3: Structural Techniques (2 hours)

    • Darts, pleats & tucks for shaping

    • Gathering & ruching for volume

    • Fabric manipulation: Pin tucks, smocking basics

    End-of-Day Assignment:

    • Students create a mini sewing sampler showcasing different techniques

  • Session 1: Fastenings & Closures (1hr)

    • Zippers: Invisible, lapped

    • Buttons & Buttonholes: Creating precise and even buttonholes

    • Hook & Eye, Snaps, and Other Closures

    Session 2: Professional Finishing Techniques (1hr)

    • Perfecting hems: Blind hem, rolled hem, double-stitched hem

    • Edge finishing: Bias binding, Hong Kong seam, and rolled edges

    Session 3: Guest lecture (1 hr)

    Session 4: Mini Project – Constructing a Garment Component (1.5 hours)

    • Students apply learned techniques to create a bodice/ sleeve/ skirt panel

    • Focus on neat seam finishes, accurate fastenings, and professional pressing

    • Final presentation and peer review

    • Discussion on common mistakes & how to improve construction skills

  • Express your interest in the project where you need assistance and schedule a one-hour individual session with the teacher to get help with your project.

    • Understanding design briefs and how to respond effectively.

    • Exploring the design process: research, ideation, prototyping, and refinement.

    Session 2: Brand Identity & Typography (11:00 AM – 12:30 PM)

    • Logo design fundamentals: Sketching, refining, and digitizing concepts.

    • Typography essentials: Understanding typefaces, hierarchy, and readability.

    • Hands-on activity: Designing a personal or mock brand identity.

    Lunch Break (12:30 PM – 1:00 PM)

    Session 3: Digital Design Tools & Mock Project (1:00 PM – 3:00 PM)

    • Introduction to Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign).

    • Hands-on poster design challenge using digital tools.

    • Experimenting with color, layout, and composition for impact.

  • Session 1: Packaging & Layout Design (10:00 AM – 11:00 AM)

    • Exploring packaging design concepts and sustainability.

    • Understanding dielines, grids, and layout design principles.

    • Hands-on activity: Creating a mock packaging concept for a product.

    Session 2: Creative Challenge – Poster & Branding Project (11:00 AM – 12:30 PM)

    • Students respond to a real-world design brief (e.g., campaign poster, social media graphics).

    • Focus on composition, storytelling, and message clarity.

    • Hands-on activity: Developing a mini branding package.

    Lunch Break (12:30 PM – 1:00 PM)

    Session 3: Portfolio & Industry Insights (1:00 PM – 3:00 PM)

    • Guest Lecture on careers & pathways.

    • Portfolio-building session: Organizing work, creating case studies, and preparing for university applications.

    • Feedback & Peer Review: Students present their projects and receive constructive critique.

These free 45-minute to one-hour sessions with a teacher provide personalised guidance to help you master your project. Once we receive your submission, we will allocate a session time.

  • Yes, all materials and accessories are provided except for sewing machines.  Please bring in your own sewing machine, lunch, drinks and snacks for the day.

  • Students should bring a packed lunch, snacks, a water bottle, and an art smock or suitable clothing for creative activities, including painting and crafting.
